Youth Internship Program (YIP)

Program Overview

The Youth Internship Program provides wage subsidy for 15-40 hours per week, payable to client by partner employer. In some cases, the hourly wage may be increased and is contingent upon the employer and NPAAMB established partnership.

  • The typical work experience for high school students is 8 weeks or 1 semester.
  • The typical work experience for post-secondary students is from 12 to 14 weeks or 1-2 semesters.
  • The typical wage for work experience participants is the current Ontario general minimum wage ($14.00 as of January 2018).
  • Youth work experience may result in an offer of employment from the employer.
  • Each participant is expected to meet their Youth Service Officer at least twice (up to a maximum of six times) during each work placement to ensure a positive relationship between the employer and client.

Eligibility

  1. To meet minimum NPAAMB eligibility requirements you must be:
    1. A registered NPAAMB client (if you are not, contact your local YSO to schedule an intake appointment).
    2. Reside within one of the following catchment areas: Kitchener-Waterloo, Brantford, Hamilton, St. Catharines, or Fort Erie and Niagara Falls (proof of residency may be required).
    3. Self-identify as an Aboriginal person (status/non-status First Nation, Inuit, or Metis).
    4. 15 to 30 years of age at the time of intake/selection.
    5. A desire to learn, participate, and accomplish personal career goals.
  2. Currently enrolled in high school, college, or university and will be returning the following fall.
  3. If a previous NPAAMB client, must demonstrate successful completion of prior interventions.
  4. The placement must align closely with identified career goals and educational attainment as defined in client action plan.
  5. The client may be a recent graduate (within the last six months) of a recognized post-secondary college or university and/or returning to continue their post-grad studies in the fall.
  6. Has been funded for no more than two training or skills development contracts within the last three years by NPAAMB and/or total funding of $30.000 (inclusive of all NPAAMB programs).

Program Supports

Job start supports could include: 

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) up to a maximum of $600.00
  • Uniforms up to a maximum of $200.00
  • Temporary transportation costs up to a maximum of 1 month and $250.00

 Employment retention supports could include:  

  • Childcare. A childcare income and needs assessment form must be completed and approved to consider for financial support. As a result of this assessment, the amount and length of financial support will be determined.
  • Other ETS’s could include: training costs as part of the YWE placement such as: DZ license or upgrade, First Aid and/or CPR training, forklift certification, computer software, etc. up to a maximum of $1500.00.
  • Certification required from employer must be from a reputable training institution such as WHMIS.

NPAAMB encourages employers to maintain full-time employment for the trainee upon the completion of the work experience program.

How to Apply

To register, please contact your regional Youth Service Officer for an application package. Please note that NPAAMB requires all applicants to submit a program application with a written proposal prior to being considered for labour market program funding. The Youth Service Officer’s will assist clients with the completion of some components of the application.

Proposal Requirements

  1. Project and objectives – Completed by Youth Service Officer
  2. Proposed activities and timelines
  3. Targeted participants: Identify qualities that make this individual a suitable candidate.
  4. Targeted outcome and benefits to urban Aboriginal community and youth – Completed by the employer.
  5. Means of measuring success – completed by Youth Service Officer.
  6. Commitment letter: Identifying how this position can lead to permanent employment for this client.
  7. Completed NPAAMB registration form, completed action plan, updated resume and cover letter and copies of certificates of training.

Make sure you include all supporting documents as outlined above. Failure to provide supporting documents will delay application process. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for review and approval process. Applicants will be contacted by their Youth Service Officer.
